Re-read the Dillard and divide it into sections according to how you feel the various moments and descriptions fit together. Then, in your journal, try your best to explain what you think the essay is about. One hint: the patients who had their cataracts removed suddenly found themselves seeing with literally untrained, unfocused, and unjaded eyes. They saw “patches of color,” so what might it mean that Dillard sees these patches, too?
Also read Zinsser chapter 15, on science and technology, and then read “The End” up to “A Happy Life” on page 475. As you read the Ehrenreich, try to identify some of the elements that Zinsser mentions in chapter 15.
